What does the user feel?

Usually the main common ingredient in ayahuasca is the plant Banisteriopsis caapi, which contains Harman alkaloids that act as inhibitors of the enzyme monoamine oxidase. These alkaloids have a calming (sedative) effect and in high doses can cause hallucinations. However, hallucinations are mostly due to the plants containing DMT, which are added to the brew.

You should know that taking certain foods, medicines and drugs in combination with MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) can be very dangerous to your health. It is advisable that users of the drug ayahuasca seek more information about this prior to taking the drug.

The effects of ayahuasca vary considerably from one brew to another due to the wide variety of plants that can be added.

Arbitrarily, the effects of the use of ayahuasca can be divided into pleasant, neutral and unpleasant.

Pleasant effects:

•       Elevated mood, euphoria

•       A comprehensive sense of connection with the universe

•       Feelings of love and empathy

•       A sense of inner peace and acceptance of oneself, others and the world

•       Deep spiritual experience

•       A sense of emotional or spiritual healing

•       Some users claim that ayahuasca also has healing properties in the somatic sense

Neutral effects:

•       Calm (sedation)

•     Strong visual hallucinations (often accounts are given of images of snakes, big cats, aliens,     goddesses)

•       Visions without meaning

•       Auditory hallucinations

•       Altered sense of time and space

•       Increased opportunity for comprehensive magical thinking, paranormal ideation

Unpleasant effects:

•    Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, sweats/chills, and other symptoms that resemble the flu or food poisoning (less likely after a few uses)
•    Fear and/or paranoia

•    The user can get the feeling that s/he is losing their mind, or that they are dying

•    Loss of balance, difficulty walking

Depending on how much is taken and how soon the user ate, the effects begin 20 to 60 minutes after ingestion.

According to users of the drug ayahuasca, the strongest effects last between 2 to 6 hours. Residual effects subside slowly and can continue from 1 to 8 hours, depending on the dose and individual metabolism. Higher doses tend to have lasting effects.
