The European Commission is preparing new actions against the "designer drugs" – 19.07.2011 08.08.2011

    The European Commission suggests harder actions against the dealership of synthetic drugs and more specifically the drugs that are also known in Bulgaria as "designer drugs" .
    According to a survey of the Commission during the last one year the quantity of the new substances , which have effects near to the effects of the illegal drugs but which also have a different chemical structure , has increased from 24 to 41 . What's more – in the Commission's report it is underlined that these new substances are sold legally in the internet and in specialized shops. The actions of the Commission are directed against the products which imitate the effects of the admitted as dangerous drugs – cocaine and extasy . The aim of the Commission's actions is to stop the legal trading of these products.
    This autumn the Commission is expected to suggest a new system of control over the dealership of the "designer drugs" which has to be similar to the System of early warning under identified problems with the distribution and certainty of the foods. It is also expected to be suggested changes in the punishments for the crimes connected with the narcotic substances.
    In a survey of "Evrobarometar" it comes clear that 5% of the young people in the European Union has tried some kind of these new drugs. The highest percent of these people is in Ireland – 16% ; in Poland and Latvia is 9% ; in UK is 8% and in Luxembourg – 7% . According to the survey's results the majority of the young people between 15 and 24 who has taken part in the survey support the prohibition of these new substances.
    According to the results of another survey over the half of the young people who has tried "designer drugs" have taken it from a friend . One third of these people have taken this kind of drug when they were in a disco or in a club ; another one third of these people has bought the new drugs from the specialized shops and 7% of them have bought the drugs from the internet. One third of the boys and one fifth of the girls who has taken part in the survey claim that they have tried marijuana at least one time in their life. The survey's results also shows that the young people make clear difference between the cannabis and the rest of the narcotic substances – 95% of  them say that they think that the cocaine is dangerous and 92% of the people who has taken part in the survey say that they know about the risks which the extasy's use hides . According to 67% of the people who have taken part in the study the marijuana's use can cause different health problems or addiction and 57% of them claim that they know about the risks that the alchohol use hides . 75% of the people who have tried at least once in their life marijuana explain that marijuana's use hides risks and one third of the young people who have tried smoking marijuana share the same oppinion . Over the half of the participants in the study explain that they could find a quantity of the drug in one day but only one fifth of them claims the same for finding extasy or cocaine .
