Serotonin System in Women's Brains Is Damaged More Readily by Alcohol than That in Men’s Brains, Study Finds 13.12.2011

Recent study in the area of the problem drinking, reported that a significant decrease in the function of the serotonin system in women's brains can be seen even only after four years of abuse. The serotonin system regulates such functions as impulse control and mood. The same results can be seen in men after 12 years of problem drinking. Both men and women suffer adverse effects, but the effects arise much more rapidly in women. This is the conclusion of multidisciplinary research carried out at the Department of Psychology and the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
